Credit Unions (Amendment) Bill

Closes 4 Dec 2026

Clause 7 - Specified financial activities

Clause 7 and the Schedule 1 it introduces the option to enable a credit union to expand the range of financial services they can provide; these include entering into conditional sales agreements, entering into hire purchase agreements and carrying on insurance distribution activities.

The clause also provides a power for the Department to specify requirements or restrictions in relation to such activities and to specify further financial activities by regulations, following consultation.

26. Do you agree that expanding the financial services credit unions can offer will enhance financial inclusion? Do you agree this Clause will adequately widen access to other financial activities?
27. Should further financial activities be specified in the Bill?
28. Do you agree that it should be left to the Department to decide to specify other financial activities that credit unions may offer?
29. Do you have any other comments on Clause 7 or suggested amendments for this clause?
