Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Questionnaire - Balmoral Show 2026

Overview

The Committee for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs would like your views on the use of Anerobic Digestors on farms. It is open to any individual or organisation to respond.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a process in which organic materials such as farm slurry, food waste and crop residues are broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. This produces biogas, which can be used to generate electricity, heat or upgraded to biomethane for use as a renewable gas, and digestate, a nutrient‑rich material that can be used as a natural fertiliser. AD is being considered in the context of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving waste and nutrient management, supporting farm diversification, and contributing to Northern Ireland’s net‑zero energy objectives.
