The Dilapidation Bill
The Northern Ireland Assembly is considering a new law – the Dilapidation Bill. The Bill is designed to stop dilapidated properties (and land) from spoiling the ‘amenity’ of local towns and villages, with the potential added benefits of encouraging regeneration, improving public safety from dangerous buildings and to improve community well-being.
This Bill would give councils stronger powers to deal with buildings and land that are neglected, seriously run-down, or dangerous. Councils could require owners to carry out repairs, clean up, or even demolish unsafe buildings. If owners refuse, they could be subject to a fine and councils could step in, fix the problem, and recover the costs.

We want to hear your views on whether these powers are fair, effective, and necessary for improving dilapidation in your area, improving safety and protecting your community.
To help gather the views of a wide range of the public the Committee has launched an additional informal survey following the closure of the official Call for Evidence. This survey asks straight-forward, direct questions to gauge public opinion and should take no more than five minutes to complete.
