Mini-Inquiry into Relationship and Sexuality Education – Children and Young People

Closes 8 Jan 2025

Opened 26 Sep 2024

Overview

The Education Committee is hosting a mini-inquiry into Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE) in Northern Ireland. The goals of this inquiry are to:

  • Understand how this subject is taught in other parts of the UK, Ireland and internationally;
  • Understand what the teaching of RSE is like across Northern Ireland; and
  • Understand if changes need to be made to RSE in Northern Ireland and if so, what this should look like.

What is RSE?

  • All pupils (up to the age of 16) must be taught RSE;
  • It helps pupils learn about themselves and others and to develop socially.
  • RSE also teaches children and young people about healthy relationships and staying safe. It can include topics such as:
    • Consent;
    • Contraception;
    • Internet Safety;
    • Stranger Danger;
    • Social Media;
    • Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse
  • It is extremely important that RSE is taught in a way which is age-appropriate, meaning that lessons reflect the age and levels of understanding of pupils.
