Closes 29 Sep 2025

Opened 7 Jul 2025

Overview

The Inquiry (Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries and Workhouses) and Redress Scheme Bill aims to set up a public inquiry to establish the facts in to the experiences of women and girls in Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries and Workhouses. The Bill also establishes a Redress Service, which will administer a Standardised Payment redress scheme. The Standardised Payment is an acknowledgement of those impact by a system of institutions established for women and girls, and its associated shame and stigma.

We deeply value the lived experiences and personal testimonies of those affected by Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries, and Workhouses. These accounts have been instrumental in shaping the development of the Bill. However, during the Committee Stage of the Bill, the focus shifts to a detailed examination of the Bill's provisions.

Please note, this process is not the Inquiry, it is a mechanism for views on the policy and content of the Bill to be expressed to the Committee.
